The Addax & Oryx Foundation has awarded us a grant towards funding a 3-year project in Port Loko, Sierra Leone. Starting in July 2021, this dedicated livelihoods programme will run alongside the existing community mental health support we provide, to help combat poverty and further improve the mental health of People with Mental Disorders/Epilepsy (PMDEs). They will receive livelihoods training from the project’s Head of Livelihoods, who will be recruited for his/her business skills and experience of delivering livelihoods programmes, with support from Health Poverty Action, Sierra Leone. This training will include help with choosing an appropriate livelihood for each PMDE’s capability and the local market demand in the area. Once they have chosen livelihoods, the PMDEs will all receive inputs to start their income generating activities.
The project’s objectives are to lift people with mental disorders/epilepsy and their caregivers and families out of poverty through livelihoods provision and support, and in doing so contribute to their recovery and resilience against future mental health stressors.
