We are fundraising for a new project in northern Uganda, where the war waged by the LRA left thousands of people traumatised. Our counsellors support thousands of people who are coping with post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health problems. But they tell us they need to help many more people than they can reach by bicycle from our base in Patongo. So they are starting a radio call-in programme to reach more trauma sufferers.
Why radio?
By hosting a radio talk show, our counsellors could support another 20,000 people. Radio is the most popular media in rural Uganda. Thousands of people listen together, even if they are illiterate or do not have electricity. On each show, our counsellors and special guests will take calls and give advice on topics such as post-traumatic stress disorder and HIV, letting people know that they are not alone and giving them vital information.
